Vaikunta Ekadashi is celebrated on December 28 2009 (Monday). Vaikunta Ekadashi is on eleventh day from the no-moon day in the Tamil month Margazhi (Dec - Jan).
On this day devotees will stay awake for the whole night and pray Lord Narayana. Many devotees will fast on this day. At early morning Sorga Vasal Thirappu will be done in all Lord Vishnu Temples. Sorga Vasal is also known as Parama Padha vasal.
Lord Narayana will enter Sorga Vasal or Vaikunta vasal and bless the devotees. Lakhs of Devotees will throng Sri Ranganatha swamy Temple at SriRangam, Sri Parthasarathy Temple at Chennai and Tirupathi Sri Venkateshwara Temple.
During Vaikunda Ekadashi Pagal Pathu, Era Pathu utsavam will be held. Lord Narayana will come in procession in various alankara and vahanam and bless devotees. It will be held for 20 days. Pagal pathu will be celebrated for 10 days preceding Vaikunta Ekadashi. Era Pathu will be celebrated for 10 days after Vaikunta Ekadasi.

Vaikunta Ekadasi festival is more elaborately celebrated by Vaishnavites. It is more prominent for Tamil and Telugu speaking people. Fasting, keep vigil at night and passing through the Vaikunta Dwaram are the important auspicious activities on the day.
Vaikunta Ekadasi is celebrated with great importance in Tirupati Balaji Temple , Srirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple , and Bhadrachalam Sita Ramachandraswamy temple. Apart from these temples, all the temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu and his incarnations celebrate Vaikunta Ekadasi.
In 2009, there are two Vaikunta Ekadasis. One in January 7, 2009 and other on December 28, 2009.
